Upcoming VPAC Training Courses In March 2010

The Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing will be running the following training courses, free to all members, in the week beginning Tuesday 2nd March and finishing Friday 5th March 2010. Registration is free and will be processed up until Friday 26th of March 2010.

A 'Hands On' Introduction to VPAC Facilities held on Tuesday 2nd of March 2010 at 10:00 am at the VPAC offices.

This course is designed as a training session, to help members get started on VPAC supercomputers as quickly as possible. It helps bridge the gap of significant differences that members generally have from the computers that they are used to using.

It helps people who have

  • Have limited experience with Unix/Linux
  • Have little or no experience on parallel computers
  • Intend to attend one of the more advanced courses or will be using precompiled applications only.

This course is free to staff and students at VPAC Member Universities, however, booking in advance is essential.

Introduction to Molecular Modelling and Visualization held on Wednesday 3rd of March 2010 at 10:00 am at the VPAC offices.

Molecular visualization and modelling has become an increasingly important tool in chemistry and the life sciences with dozens of free and commercial applications for the researcher to use. The aim if this course is to introduce basic molecular modelling concepts and give practical exercises in using some modelling packages. Starting with an introduction to molecular visualization and then moving on to practical exercises, this course will use a variety of software packages to gauge users interest.

An Introduction to HPC & Parallel Programming Basics held on Thursday 4th March at 10:00 am at the VPAC offices.

This course provides an introduction to both high performance computing hardware and theory, and the MPI parallel programming library. The course is appropriate for those who are relatively new to HPC, and would like a general introduction to the field, information to help choose which hardware and software to use, and skills for developing parallel codes. The session requires at least a basic knowledge of C or Fortran.

Intermediate MPI Programming & Parallel Application Development Workshop held on Friday 5th March 2010 at 10:00 am at the VPAC offices.

This course combines an overview of how to solve the design issues you will face when writing large-scale parallel programs, and a hands-on workshop on using the MPI parallel communication library to implement these solutions. It is suitable for those who have some knowledge of parallel programming, but would like to improve their skills and effectiveness.

We strongly suggest you attend the previous day's 'Introduction to HPC & Parallel Programming Basics', unless you already have experience of using MPI and its core functions.
