Perforin Research Breakthrough

A summary of their research findings was also published in The Age today, "'Assassin' protein a killing machine to salvage our bodies from within", on page 3, as well as in The Australian and the ABC science website. The graphic used for the article was developed by Dr. Kuiper of VPAC.

The research shows how perforin molecules can enter the membrane of cells carrying damaging viruses and destroy the cell from within. Whilst knowledge that the human immune system enters diseased cells was observed over one hundred years ago, if perforin is defective then the ability of the body to fight infected cells is significantly reduced. The research paper gives new light on how perforin enters cells.

Further research on perforin's behaviour may also be used in against cells infected with leukaemia, cancer, malaria and diabetes.
