About VPAC

VPAC, a leading, independent eResearch and Advanced Computing R&D service provider, is a not for profit Research Service Provider established in 2000 by a consortium of Victorian Universities. Current members are:

VPAC provides expertise, training and support in eResearch, Advanced Computing, and professional R&D including the application of Advanced Computing for academia, industry, and government.

Our aim is to help Australians utilise eResearch tools and Advanced Computing to create innovations that will place Australia at the forefront of global scientific achievement.

Advanced Computing refers to any computing application that is outside the scope of traditional "off the shelf" or "packaged" applications such as email, spreadsheets, word processing, and accounting packages. Examples of Advanced Computing applications include:

  • Large-scale computational models and simulations for scientific and engineering research
  • Analysis such as weather and climate forecasting, vehicular crash analysis, and engineering design
  • Development and support of custom databases for life sciences
  • Development of specialised web portals for advanced computing and storage applications
  • Visualisation software and hardware for scientific research
  • Embedded control systems

VPAC operates a state of the art High Performance Computing facility with Software, Advanced Visualisation and Collaboration tools, and Grid Resources to support the research community, and has expertise across a broad range of sciences and related technologies.

VPAC is a Research Service Provider (Registration Number 40150). A Research Service Provider is an organisation approved by the Industry Research and Development Board that is capable of carrying out contracted Australian R&D in one or more classes of activity on behalf of eligible companies, or through collaborative arrangements for a group of companies. For companies dealing with VPAC, this means that expenditure for Australian R&D work contracted to VPAC may be eligible for the full 150% tax deduction in the year of income, irrespective of the annual R&D expenditure of the claimant.
